In early February, young people at The Avenues Youth Project embarked on a mission to promote and highlight something about their culture that gives them a sense of power and pride.

Taking inspiration from the 2025-26 theme for Black History Month, ‘Standing firm in pride and power’. 6 young people aged 14+ explored themes of identity and community, developed content and collaborated with members of St Andrews Youth Club to create ‘Our Culture, Our Stories’ – A magazine created by young people, for young people.

Issue 1 of ‘Our Culture, Our Stories’ spotlights aspects of the author’s individual cultures that bring them a sense of pride. Highlighting cultural similarities to promote unity within their community.

Over 10 weeks, members of the magazine project learnt the art of storytelling, design, photography and more to create a colourful issue that discusses topics that span three continents.

From poetry to fragrance, history to celebration, the pages of ‘Our Culture, Our Stories’ take you on a journey of discovery.
